Police use spike belt Friday to stop fleeing driver in Bracebridge

BRACEBRIDGE — Provincial police are looking for witnesses after a four OPP cruisers were damaged during chase and stop Friday afternoon.

Police were responding to an assist call on Hwy. 11 when the driver sped away.

They say that on Feb. 15, just before 2 p.m., officers responded to a request to assist a motorist on Hwy. 11 S. in Bracebridge.

After a brief interaction, the driver fled in his vehicle.

Police followed as he exited onto Cedar Lane near Hwy. 117 and continued driving south, refusing to stop for police.

Police deployed a spike belt and were able to stop the vehicle before it entered a school zone however four cruisers sustained minor damage in the process.

They say no one was injured and the driver was arrested at the scene.

Cedar Lane was currently closed just north of the Muskoka Education Centre as police continued their investigation and charges are pending.
