UPDATE: Remains of woman, 72, identified at golf course in Shanty Bay

ORO-MEDONTE TOWNSHIP — The remains of 72-year-old woman reported missing in Barrie just over a year ago have been identifed.

Mandy Thompson, 72, went missing a year ago at Barrie.

On Tuesday February 27, 2018, shortly before 8 a.m., officers from the Barrie OPP detachment were called to the Heritage Hills Golf Club at 367 Line 1 South in Oro-Medonte Township.

The club is just north east of Barrie at the Hwy. 400/11 interchange, in Shanty Bay.

A group of hunters had located what were believed to be human remains.

Upon arrival at the scene, police were able to confirm that the remains were human. But due to buildup of snow and ice in the area, a controlled process was required to slowly thaw out the underlying ground and melt the snow with an enclosed tent and portable heaters.

Since that time, the Barrie-Orillia OPP Crime Unit has worked very closely with the detectives from the Barrie Police Service (BPS) Homicide Unit in order to identify the deceased.

On Friday March 2, 2018, a Forensic Anthropologist attended the scene and coordinated the removal of the remains, which were then transported to the Office of the Chief Coroner and Forensic Pathology Service (OCC- OFPS) for a forensic post mortem examination.

The post mortem examination has been conducted and the remains have been positively identified as belonging to 72-year old Madelaine (Mandy) Thompson.

Thompson was reported missing to the Barrie Police Service on Friday February 3, 2017, and was the subject of an extensive and exhaustive search for a number of weeks following her disappearance that included resources from both the Barrie Police Service and the OPP.

The Barrie Police Service and the OPP wish to thank the public for their continued support and ongoing assistance while these investigations were carried out.
