ALGONQUIN HIGHLANDS — A hiker had to be airlifted to hospital yesterday afternoon after being injured while descending Bear Mountain, a popular hiking and climbing trail located on Bear Lake just west of Algonquin Park.
Police are looking for possible witnesses to the accident just northeast of Dorset in the Haliburton area.
They say that on Sunday, September 27, at about 1:45 emergency services were dispatched to the trail in the Madawaska area of the Township of South Algonquin, about 20 kms west of Barry’s Bay. The trail access is off Major Lake Road.
And just out the west gate of the Algonquin Park’s west gate.
The trail is rated as “moderately” difficult.
Upon arrival, police were told two members of a group of climbers had completed their climb and were in the process of descending when one of them was struck by a falling rock.
The climber lost consciousness and had to be assisted down by other members of their group.
A 911 call was placed as the area is a water-access only area.
Fire rescue launched a boat to take police and EMS to the scene.
The climber was transported to the vessel where they were taken to a pre-arranged landing area so that ORNGE Air could transport them to a Toronto area trauma centre.
Police did not identify the climber.
And they believe there were more hikers/climbers in the area at the time of the accident and are looking to speak with anyone who may have witnessed this incident.

Rugged terrain on Canadian Shield
Bear Mountain is on the Beaver, Loon and Bear Lake Scenic’ Loop and offers the “experience of rugged terrain on the Canadian Shield, winding through dense white pine and sugar maple forests.”
And is rated as “moderate difficulty.”
“Expect rolling hills and technical, boulder-strewn sections,” an online description says, “with a reward highlight of Greg’s View offering a steady, sometimes steep uphill climb with panoramic vistas overlooking the Upper Madawaska Basin.”
