HUNTSVILLE — A man arrested here on Gun Club Road yesterday morning was returned to hospital a second time for assessment after escaping an ambulance and then leading multiple police services on a chase into nearby woods before being caught injured.
The Huntsville OPP detachment reported late Monday afternoon that the province’s independent Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate to investigate local police following the incident.
Police here say that on Sunday, June 14, shortly after 10:15 a.m. their officers responded to the call on Gun Club Road, which is off Hwy. 11 southeast of the downtown near the Madill Church.
They say one person was arrested and transported to the detachment.
Police did not say what they were arrested for or nature of the call.
While in custody, the individual requested medical attention and was transported to a local hospital by ambulance for assessment.
Upon arrival to the hospital, the individual exited the ambulance and fled on foot towards a wooded area.
Which prompted an immediate coordinated search involving members of the detachment, the OPP Emergency Response Team and the OPP Canine Unit.
The person was eventually located a second time nearby and returned to police custody.
After being found, police say the unidentified required medical attention and was transported to hospital for assessment of unknown injuries.
The OPP notified the SIU, which invoked its mandate as is common when person involved with police is seriously injured.
As a result, police at the detachment say they will not be able to provide further information.
And has referred all media inquiries to the SIU.
