BUSINESSS AFTER HOURS AT ARTS AT THE ALBION MIX AND MINGLE NETWORKING FOR MERCHANTS

GRAVENHURST — Business is no longer 9 to 5.

Since COVID it’s more 24-7.

So it wasn’t unusual to see a couple dozen people in the Arts at the Albion Thursday — after work.

The arts shop’s doors were open for another of the Gravenhurst Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Hours socials.

The mix and mingle, an opportunity for members to network and buy if they want, takes place every month at a different host business.

Many merchants retail and otherwise don’t always have the time to explore neighbouring businesses to meet and often refer customers to other sales centres in town.

Councillors Erin Strength and Penny Varney, left, chat while chamber members Elaine and David Rose enjoy an animated conversation with Alexander Retiremement Home owner Leonard Ojha at Thursday’s chamber Business After Hours social.

Host Penny Varney, in her welcoming talk, shared their hours of operation (daily except Sunday and Monday); and introduced a few of the artists on hand like her photographer husband Tony; Gravenhurst sculptor Ron Leach and Utterson potter Naomi Brinkof.

The shop in the old hotel dining room (“still with its original floors”) is the kind of unique boutique the town would like to see more of, said Varney a jeweller and also Gravenhurst’s downtown councillor.

A couple dozen member artists take turns staffing the storefront, which also welcomes guest artists — including some high school students for Christmas.

Arts at the Albion is a niche business at the town’s main intersection across from the post office.

One other After Hours visitors got short two-hour taste of in their “spare time” and will now be able to refer their customers to them and tell them a bit more about what’s inside the Arts at the Albion.

Arts at the Albion member Ron Leach admires paintings by one of the other Muskoka artists.
David Suzuki and Margaret Atwood jump off the wall in a pair of striking etchings by another Gravenhurst artist Sylvia Bouchard.
While other businesses were mostly closed, Arts at the Albion was welcoming fellow merchants to a Gravenhurst Chamber of Commerce After Hours event Thursday.
