MUSKOKA — The long-awaited decision on the “preferred property in Bracebridge” for the site of the new South Muskoka Memorial Hospital will be announced April 17 at 7 p.m. in Dwight.

That’s the first of eight public meetings to update residents of the location after months — if not years — of consultation with community members and deliberations by the search committee and board of Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MAHC).

They say they are “looking forward to hosting a second series of community information sessions across our region, both in-person and virtually starting April 17, to update the community on our capital redevelopment project.”

They add today that “as MAHC moves closer to completing the site selection component,” the second round of community engagement will include an update on the site selection process for SMMH and present the preferred property in Bracebridge.”

In addition, since consulting communities in January and seeking feedback through an online survey in February, they’ve identified two additional properties for review in Bracebridge.

“Feedback has also informed the criteria being used to evaluate the properties and we appreciate everyone’s engagement and involvement in our site selection process for the south campus.”

A leading candidate for the new site of the hospital in Bracebridge is Fowler Construction property off Pine Street, behind the Walmart, which could also see Depot Drive road expanded into the site.
