GRAVENHURST — Looking at the magnificence of the Segwun and Wenonah II, it’s incredible to believe that last century more than a dozen ships of their ilk once plied the Muskoka Lakes before returning to their home port and berthing next to them.

And with weeks till they set sail for a full summer — after two years of COVID-inflicted restrictions — the Municipal Heritage Committee is ensuring more of what’s left of the Gravenhurst’s glorious historical past is preserved when once the Muskoka Steamship Fleet ruled the waves of the Muskoka Lakes.

On Wednesday, May 18, at 2 p.m. at the Muskoka Discovery Centre (GPS: N 44.91999 W 079.38950) members are dedicating the SS Islander and SS Cherokee wheelhouses as “Heritage Properties.”

All are welcome to join the celebration at the entrance to the water and lakes museum.

The Islander and Cherokee wheelhouses, cleaned up and repainted, will be dedicated Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Muskoka Discovery Centre by the Gravenhurst Municipal Heritage Committee.
