MALIBU’S ‘AMAZING’ SOLO CONCERT WAS A BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATERS

GRAVENHURST — It wasn’t exactly Music on the Barge.

Even if was how the famed — yet pandemic-postponed — concert series began at Gull Lake Rotary Park seven decades ago.

On a floating dock.

But still it was “amazing” all the same.

An impromptu mini concert — for a couple of kids fishing, some ducklings and a lady with a dog that chases geese off from the beach — had a plucky artist picking away a real and haunting hymn on her hand-held harp.

Malibu, who said she doesn’t come from Toronto — “Oh God no.” — played stopped for a bite to eat and on command performed a brief version of “Amazing Grace,” which echoed over the still waters of Gull Lake on a drizzling mid-week afternoon yesterday.

And it appeared to be enjoyed by the ducks, at least the few that paddled nearby — if not the others who didn’t wade in with comment.

Or, sadly, applause.

It’s too bad inclement weather Wednesday kept swimmers at bay or they would have heard something out of the ordinary.

Something spontaneous and at once peaceful, graceful and beautiful.

A fitting and inspiring tune for troubled times.

Its bridge a helping hand in getting over troubled waters.

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now am found
Was blind but now I see

Was Grace that taught my heart to fear
And Grace, my fears relieved
How precious did that Grace appear
The hour I first believed

Through many dangers, toils and snares
We have already come
T’was Grace that brought us safe thus far
And Grace will lead us home
