SIMCOE-MUSKOKA — O Canada. Oh happy days ahead on the COVID front.

It’s official. Next Wednesday Ontario moves to Stage 2 of reopening.

And word is that the second stage — coming as virtual school ends early next week — won’t last three weeks before Stage 3 kicks in and most restrictions could be lifted.

This as the health unit reported 9 cases in Simcoe this afternoon.

Again none in Muskoka.

Public Health Ontario (PHO) said this morning Simcoe-Muskoka had 5 cases.

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit counted six for June 23 and one each on May 25, April 16 and March 30.

They add there were 4 new variants, with 63 still active. And 33 are of the delta VOC.

Premier Doug Ford says that with more than 76 per cent of Ontarians vaccinated once and almost 30 per cent twice to economic door is swinging wider open.

Provincewide, PHO reports 296 cases and 6 deaths. Yesterday that was 255 and 11.

Toronto had 35 (57), York 14 (10), Peel 20 (25), North Bay-Parry Sound 5 (23) and Porcupine 9 (1).

IN OTHER COVID NEWS …

  • The nearly 300 deaths per day now in the U.S. are all in people who have not been vaccinated. The Associated Press says it looked at available government data for May and it shows “breakthrough” infections in fully-vaccinated Americans accounted for fewer than 1,200 of more than 853,000 COVID-19 hospitalizations. That’s about 0.1 per cent.
  • Quebec reports 96 cases today and 4 deaths.
  • COVAX is forecasting 100,000 million fewer vaccines for poor countries as a supplier in India is holds back doses for that country. Still UN-backed program will proved 1.9 billion vaccines around the world including free doses to 92 countries.
  • Biden bans evictions for a month to help Americans affected by COVID to stay in their homes, and as the president is expected to fall short of his goal of vaccinating 70 per cent of the country by July 4 Independence Day.
  • Denmark is urged Europe Cup fans at a June 17 game between the Danes and Belgium to get tested after 3 people got the delta variant.
Large gatherings like Tuesday’s Indigenous memorial in Bracebridge are possible next Thursday on Canada Day when Ontario goes to Stage 2 of its reopening plan the day before.
