GRAVENHURST — A Brampton man will be in bail court Monday after a police pursuit Friday that began on Hwy. 11 in Bracebridge — went through the town and back onto the highway southbound — ended in Gravenhurst with the driver caught with a loaded handgun.

A passenger in the vehicle fled and police are looking for him, but say there are no public safety concerns at this time.

Provincial police say that on Oct. 2, just before midnight, an officer was doing radar checks on Hwy. 11 northbound in Bracebridge when a vehicle was spotted doing in excess of the speed limit.

The officer clocked the vehicle at 143 km/hr and tried to stop it.

But the driver exited onto Cedar Lane and continued into the town of Bracebridge at a high rate of speed, refusing to stop for pursuing police.

After a short pursuit the officer was able to block the vehicle on Shier Street.

But police claim the driver lurched his vehicle at the officer who was able to maneuver out of the situation.

Other officers located the suspect vehicle travelling southbound on Hw. 11.

It eventually pulled off into Gravenhurst and police found and stopped it as it entered a driveway on Fernwood Drive in Gravenhurst.

Officers arrested the driver and during an investigation found a loaded handgun in the vehicle.
