COTTAGERS DONATE $135K TO HOSPITAL EMERGENCY FUND

MUSKOKA — Concerns about cottagers coming north adding pressure to local health services are being met with a large donation by some of “neighbours.”

In response to the hospitals’ call for cash and supplies for its Covid-19 Emergency Response Fund, a group of cottagers has donated $135,000 to the South Muskoka Memorial Hospital Foundation.

“We’re all neighbours up here and we wanted to do our part to make sure our Muskoka community remains strong,” said a spokesperson for the anonymous group of donors.

The fund was established last week by Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MAHC) to acquire equipment and supplies related to the pandemic, including three new ICU beds at a cost of $45,000 each, says a release Monday, March 30.

Foundation director Colin Miller said “We don’t know what’s coming down the pipeline, but we don’t want money to be an issue. If the hospital needs something and we have money in the bank, we can buy it right away.”

Jodie Evans, the foundation’s chair, expressed her gratitude to all the individuals, local businesses, service clubs and other community associations who have supported the fund.

She said “Muskoka’s cottagers and seasonal residents have always been strong supporters of the hospital. “I am extremely grateful for everything they do to support our local economy and the contributions they make to support every corner of our community.”

Speaking on behalf of the group of cottagers who made the gift, the donor, who wished to remain anonymous, said they were pleased to contribute.

“Muskoka is important for all of us — the place our families come together and grow together. Supporting local health care and community services is just the right thing to do.”

The Bracebridge hospital site is adding three ICU beds at a cost of $45,000 each.
