Suspect arrested in Orillia weapon assault

ORILLIA A Toronto man arrested in Scarborough Saturday, faces a charge of assault with a weapon after a nearby schools were put in a lockdown Thursday.

The Toronto suspect was arrested in Scarborough after schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution.

Provincial police say that on June 7, 2018, at about 12:44 p.m. the Orillia OPP were called to Matchedash Street North for reports of people fighting and someone with an edged weapon.

Officers went to the scene and observed two males and a female with minor injuries.

They say all three refused medical attention.

The suspect had fled the area prior to police arrival.

As a precautionary measure the schools in the area were put on a hold and secure.

The OPP’s Central Region Canine and Emergency Response Team was called in to assist in locating the suspect.

The hold and secure was lifted a short while later without incident at any of the schools.

Police believe this to be an isolated incident and there is no threat to public safety.

As a result of the investigation police identified the suspect as 31-year-old Momokai Massaquoi.

He was arrested June 9 by Toronto Police Service and transported to Orillia, where he was held for a bail hearing.

The accused was charged with two counts of Assault with a Weapon and one count of Breach of Recognizance.

He was held in custody he is set to appear next on June 13, 2018 at the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie.
