BRACEBRIDGE — A main street smash and grab yesterday netted a thief “several hundred dollars” when they stole a “tray full of money.”
Call it a smash and grab — or theft(s) are us.
On Wednesday, September 23, police responded to the break and enter the night before at the Bracebridge location of the Minds Alive Muskoka Toys, Games and Books on Manitoba Street. They also have a Huntsville store.
They said in a release today that “unknown suspects smashed a window to gain entry and stole a cash register containing several hundred dollars in cash.”
But the store was empty overnight and “nobody got hurt,” employee Diana McConnell said this morning.
And it was “not the cash register itself,” she said that was taken, as widely reported by police.
“They couldn’t get into it. So they just took a bunch of screw drivers and stuff to pry open the till,” she said.
“And they just took the tray full of the money. It was our float.”
Police were mistaken on that, she said.
“They just don’t know, it’s down to the lingo, right. Not everybody works in retail.”
But it was all good Thursday, she said.
“Yeah, no product was taken. It’s just our (door) window got smashed and our float got taken.”
McConnell said she wasn’t the worker who discovered the break-in and called police.
“I just anticipate more of this happening with the times, the wage gap and people struggling.
“If we don’t take care of people more of this is going to happen.”
She admitted it was “kind of strange” that the thief didn’t grab any toys, books, games or goods while smashing store’s front entrance — it old brown wooden door now boarded up.
“No, they were probably panicked. I have no idea. It’s kind of strange.
“Like we have a huge front window, we’re very visible.
“I’ll be surprised if they don’t find them, to be quite honest with you.”
McConnell said they “do not” have security cameras.
“But there are surveillance (cameras) downtown at that corner (next door on the hill at the Manitoba and Dominion streets intersection).
“And we’re right across the street from a pot shop. They have surveillance.”
