ORILLIA This week’s northern lights include the ‘Bright Nights!’ of the Orillia Silver Band Saturday here at St. Paul’s Centre.

Theatre and dance are in the spotlight on and on the playbill for their spring/summer concert for all to dive in and enjoy.

Seven p.m.

Tickets available at www.orilliasilverband.com and at the door to hear two wonderful overtures from the operatic theatre repertoire: The eye-opening “Overture to Raymond,” by French composer Ambroise Thomas; and the brilliant “Overture to Die Fledermaus” by Viennese composer Johann Strauss II.

The musical skills of three of the band’s own soloists include Michael Fraser playing the tour-de-force euphonium solo “Harlequin”. It’s composer Philip Sparke’s tribute to the theatre.

Then there’s the scintillating “Jubilance” by William Himes presented by the band’s solo cornetist, Jonas Feldman.

As well, solo hornist Rita Arendz performs the exciting and theatrical “Variations on a Welsh Theme” by composer Peter Kneale.

All showcase numbers no to be missed

And of course music specifically targeted as popular dance selections has a place in Bright Nights!

The there’s legendary swing band leader Glenn Miller who gave us so many great swing-dance tunes to enjoy forever.

Among them his wonderfully memorable arrangements of “In the Mood” and “Pennsylvania 6-5000”.  So bring your dance shoes, your partner and your energy.

Your help and encouragement of the band is always greatly appreciated and allows them to continue to bring more of the brass band and percussion instrumentation that’s irresistibly contagious.

See you soon at the theatre.
