HOCKEY NIGHT IN GRAVENHURST … CIRCA 1960s

GRAVENHURST — Fans of the FB group If You Grew Up in Gravenhurst will be sure to post this Christmas greeting.
Sally Boyes Bullock, a sales rep at Enjoy Muskoka in Gravenhurst, mailed out this great photo card of Linc Walker (of Walker’s Point) and a bunch of kids playing hockey on Gravenhurst’s main street, when the main block was iced over with a rink for a week.
Minor hockey teams would play evening games and adults would curl on the same ice surface, often made by Shorty Kelly, who would be out late at night scraping and flooding.
History buffs with good eyes will spot, in the background from left, both the Luck’s and original Stedman 5 cents to a $1 stores, Tipple’s Paper and Party Shop, Jackson’s Drug Store and part of Brackley’s Real Estate and Insurance office.
Just outside the frame, on the right, would was Maher Shoes, the sponsor of one of the hockey player’s team in the foreground.
Love the his old two-piece helmet. Wonder if anyone still has one of those. Or if you recognize anyone else in the photo, including who the other team is.

The shot was likely taken by Hank Fry, from just in front of the old Sloans’ Restaurant. It comes from the Gravenhurst Archives collection.
A nice, timely memory for the season.
One worth repeating another carnival.
