PARRY SOUUND-MUSKOKA — The stunning word that today local MP Scott Aitchison is expected to publicly announce his fall resignation is shocking to this riding and another major blow to his party he once sought to lead.
The long-time Conservative, and third term member of Parliament, is holding a press announcement Wednesday that would see him talk about leaving his job within months.
News reports yesterday said close confidants have said he is departing following 30 years in municipal and federal politics.
They said he will be pursuing others interests.
The Huntsville resident was a town, district councillor and mayor there before easily becoming MP in 2019 (winning by 6,200 votes) and re-elected in 2021 (by 14,000 votes).
In his last election, April 25, 2025, his margin diminished back to about 6,000 votes.
He was first elected as a councillor in 1994 at age 21.
He turned 53 on January 14.
Aitchison also ran a national campaign the Conservative leadership in 2022 against Pierre Poilievre.
His losing bid still left him as the party’s housing critic, something he has long fought for and been a supporter of across the riding with some success. He also served in various other party shadow cabinet positions and repesented them on many joint party Parliamentary committees.
His resignation will be the eighth MP loss for Poilievre.
There is no date for when another federal by-election will be held.
Prime Minister Mark Carney will have to make that decision.
