GRAVENHURST — The streets, roads, storefronts and front yards are dotted with election signs as the race to sit on town councils across Muskoka has gone into overdrive as the gates have opened on interesting new candidates seeking seats in the Oct. 26 municipal election.
With a lot of promising new contenders facing old same faces there’s opportunity to compare the past, present and future of communities in a changing world.
Saturday last the MLA vetted some in one fell swoop to recommend to their lemming-like Gravenhurst members.
Among fresh new mature faces in Gravenhurst’s core is Erin Gauthier, a woman who is running on her roots and as a “front-line crisis counsellor at a shelter supporting women and families affected by domestic violence.”
In a press release this week, she says she’s campaigning within the newly drawn borders of Ward 1, because “I believe in Gravenhurst and in its potential to become an even stronger, more vibrant community.”
A Gravenhurst resident more than a decade, she says her husband Robert’s family has deep roots here, including his Gauthier Group company building the local Gateway subdivision near Lake Muskoka and other housing elsewhere in Muskoka.
A mother of “three wonderful children. I bring 19 years of experience as a contracts administrator and nearly five years working as a front-line crisis counsellor at a shelter supporting women and families affected by domestic violence.
“My work has taught me to listen without judgment, lead with compassion and focus on solutions.”
She adds that “as the youngest of 13 children, I learned early the importance of family, generosity, humour and looking out for one another. Losing my mother to cancer at the age of five reinforced for me how precious life and people are.”
Gauthier says she wants to “create more attainable housing for full-time residents, support local businesses, revitalize our downtown, help improve our roads and infrastructure, and create more opportunities for connection and recreation.
“I don’t want to simply talk about what needs to change. I want to show up, listen, work hard and walk the walk.”
