YOUNG FOX KIT SIGHTING NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT IN PINE RIDGE COMMUNITY, RESIDENT ASSURES NEIGHBOURS

GRAVENHURST  — If you live on the edge of a forest a little wildlife is but one of nature’s attractions.

So seeing a silver fox kit out during the day is completely normal. And nothing to get alarmed about, says an unstartled Pine Ridge resident who’s caught sight the past month.

Foxes are opportunistic hunters, meaning they’ll be active whenever food is available not just at night, say experts.

Any other concerns are unwarranted.

During the day, they’re often hunting squirrels, rabbits, birds, and mice.

After giving birth in early spring seeing kits in summer aren’t that unusual — and nothing to worry about.

Despite some raised eyebrows in the neighbourhood community next to the town hall and adjacent to the Hahne Farm heritage trails.

A fox being active during the day does not mean it is sick, the unnamed resident reminds everyone.

They say remember to:

  • Keep pets away from the area
  • Do not approach or disturb the den
  • Only report if a fox appears truly ill (stumbling, disoriented, unusually aggressive, mange, etc.)

You do not need to report seeing a fox outside, wildlife authorities say.

Kit sigthings since June haven’t startled one Pine Ridge resident, who reminds neighbours not to worry about them foraging during the day. PHOTOS submitted
