IT’S BEGINNING TO LOOK A LOT LIKE — LAST YEAR. 15-20 CMS OF HAZARDOUS SNOW FORECAST FOR THURSDAY AND IN TO WEEKEND

Mark Clairmont | MuskokaTODAY.com

MUSKOKA — A year ago — a month to Christmas — the threat of snow was “a chance of flurries.”

Within days “snow-mageddon” blanketed south Muskoka with the worst winter blast in decades. It left thousands powerless and the rest of us socked in for days in the most memorable seasonal start that anyone can recall in recent memory.

Kids will recall it for years.

In the beginning …. Last year’s dreadful snow start actually began a day earlier on Nov. 29 when in Gravenhurst contractors were just finishing paving in front of MuskokaTODAY.com’s Bay Street West bureau. Then all hell broke loose the next day. FILE PHOTOS Mark Clairmont MuskokaTODAY.com

Tuesday the forecast is the same for wet snow tomorrow night.

Are we ready for history repeating itself?

Are service providers on high alert this time?

Will they be prepared?

Will you?

What did you learn then that you can now apply this week?

Will you and others again be helping one another?

Local police warn motorists of a snowstorm moving in the area beginning Thursday and possibly continuing into the weekend.

They — and others — say hazardous conditions from the west starting in Parry Sound area coming across in to Muskoka Thursday, bringing snowfall amounts may reach up to 15-30 cm.

When the snow really came Nov. 30, 2024, people rose up to the challenges and could be counted on to support one another. It should be the same this year.

The OPP say road visibility could be reduced at times due to heavy and blowing snow.

They urge travel plans be adjusted to account for these conditions.

Allow extra time for travel and check road conditions before heading out. Slow down, plan, and prepare for delays. The conditions will not adapt to your driving, rather you must adapt to the conditions.

If you do have to be on the roads:

  • Check 511on.ca or local media for road conditions or closures
  • Ensure your fuel tank is full, top up your windshield washer fluid and have an emergency travel kit (food, blanket, candle, extra cell phone battery) in case you are stranded or stuck.
  • Clear snow from your entire vehicle, including and head and tail lights. Do a circle check of your vehicle whenever you stop as snow will accumulate and obscure your brake and tail lights
  • SLOW DOWN, leave extra space, keep your eyes on the road ahead
  • Make sure your full lighting system on. Don’t assume that you will automatically have lights.
  • Your lights can help to ensure other drivers can see you.
  • Do not assume town roads will be safer than the highway, so same rules apply: Slow Down, watch for icy intersections.
  • If you encounter a closed roadway, do not travel on it. It may be impassable or the scene of a collision.
  • Follow marked detours when posted.
  • Do not pass an operating snow plow. They are working to make that road safer for you.
  • For information on emergency plans and kits go to www.getprepared.gc.ca.

2024 Environment Canada records show precipiation numbers last year between now and week before Christmas.
Dust off your broom and snow brush from two weeks ago. You’ll need to keep it handy – along with your shovel and all other winter tools – heading in to this weekend. Just to be sure. Call it a another test run for what appears to be a long, long winter ahead to end2025 in to 2026.
