GRAVENHURST — A pair of highway robberies this week along Hwy. 11 north and south of Gravenhurst has police asking the public’s surveillance help.

The latest incident, last night, occurred south of the business core at the One Stop gas bar. And according to the clerk they believed the man had a weapon.

OPP, with the assistance of the Muskoka Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU), are investigating both cases.

The first attempted robbery, on Tuesday Sept. 10, was reported at 10:40 p.m., when police were dispatched to the Skyways gas station, just south of Hwy. 118.

Clerk Diane Chadwick, who was on duty today, said Lori — the long-time overnight worker of 41 years — was filling up the ice machine outside and followed the man inside and he went directly behind the cash counter.

“He demanded she open the till and she told him ‘no.’ He smashed stuff and threw it around.”

Police said quickly the suspect fled the area on foot, empty-handed.

It just proves, said Chadwick: “Don’t mess with an old woman.”

The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 5-foot-9 and wearing a grey hoodie with the hood up, a white mask and a black bandana on his head and black pants.

He probably fled in this white half-ton, say police who are seeking more surveillance video from anyone living between South Kahshe Lake Road and Hwy. 118 in Gravenhurst.

On Thursday, Sept. 12 at 11:35 p.m., officers responded to a 911 call from an employee reporting a robbery at a service centre located on Hwy. 11 north, just south of Gravenhurst at Kahshe Road South.

The victim said a male party entered the store and demanded money.

Although the victim did not see a weapon, they believed one was present.

The suspect left the store with a quantity of cash and potentially got into a white pick-up truck and left travelling north on Hwy. 11 North, said a joint OPP release Friday.

The suspect is described at being a male wearing a grey hoodie, black pants, white shoes, grey gloves and a white face covering. He was carrying a black Coors Light cooler style backpack.

On Sept. 1 the One Stop was hit by an overnight theft at 2:50 a.m.

These robberies follow a series of break and enters that occurred in Gravenhurst during late August and early September — and police are asking anyone with home surveillance in the area of Hwy. 11 north between North Kahshe Lake Road and Hastings Drive, including Tryon Drive. And/or Hwy. 11 north between Doe Lake Road, the Gravenhurst Parkway and Highway 118 to check their cameras for any helpful information.
