‘VOLUNTEER EXTRAORDINAIRE’ BARB McCABE HONOURED THIS AFTERNOON AS GRAVENHURST SENIOR OF THE YEAR

GRAVENHURST — Barb McCabe may be Senior of the Year.
But the town should either re-define name of the award or the meaning of senior.
Because “Barb” defies her age, being one of the busiest “young” volunteers in Gravenhurst.
This afternoon she was “very, very humbled” at receiving the recognition at the Opera House during the 40th annual Mayor’s Tea.
Mayor Heidi Lorenz presented her with the “well-deserved award,” a certificate and flowers.
She said McCabe was nominated for her “significant contribution to the community” and her “dedication, strong work ethic and positive impact on Gravenhurst.”
Her nominators called her a “volunteer extraordinaire who never stops.”
In her thank you remarks McCabe said she was just “so proud” to live here and to work with all the “wonderful” volunteers who make Gravenhurst great.
A past president of the Rotary and Probus clubs, she’s worked in most of their executive positions. As well as with the chamber of commerce and its special events like the upcoming car show. And with Rotary’s Rock the Barge anniversary project that is being dedicated June 20 at Gull Lake Rotary Park at 2 p.m.
She has been a Rotarian since 2000 and was a founding member of Probus in 2002.
McCabe said she was “deeply honoured.”
“It’s a town that runs on volunteers,” she said acknowledging many past recipients on hand and those others like her who also do good work.
“Whatever we can do to help.
“I’m so very proud of this town.”
Entertainment and a luncheon followed for more than 60 people on hand.
Nominators said McCabe never stops volunteering.
