SIGNS OF COOPERATION IN ‘HEART OF MUSKOKA’ HOSPITAL BATTLE FALL BY WAYSIDE AS TOWN ORDERS SSMH SIGNS OFF MUNICIPAL PROPERTY BY FRIDAY

BRACEBRIDGE — First it was Gravenhurst — now it’s Bracebridge.
Has the Heart of Muskoka lost its heart for its hospital?
The town has instructed the Save South Muskoka Hospital group to take a step back with their signs.
Supporters have until Friday at 2 p.m. to remove their distinctive red roadside signs or place them farther back from travelled portions of streets and district highways.
Phyllis Winnington-Ingram says this afternoon “The Town of Bracebridge is taking down ALL Save South Muskoka Hospital signs on town property.
“If you have a sign in front of your home or business that is on town property, could you please move it back onto your property?
“They have given us three days. So by Friday at 2 pm they will taking any signs that haven’t been moved.”
She says “It goes without saying, I was a little stunned when I received the call this afternoon. This was a directive by Cheryl Kelley, director of planning and development.
“The only concession I got when asking for a week is they would identify all of the signs they are going to take down in 24 hours.
“I am disheartened that the town will be allowing all sorts of other signs during the summer, but not supporting one of most important assets.”
Winnington-Ingram added later: “Also Rick (Mayor) just called me and I did thank him for being generous in not implementing the bylaw until now.
“He said that signs are starting to get out of hand by others — making it hard to prefer one group over another.”
Gravenhurst issued the same edict last month, saying SSMH’s signs contravened local bylaws against about “incidental” signs.
