FIRST DEGREE MURDER CHARGE LAID AGAINST INMATE AFTER DEATH AT BEAVER CREEK PRISON SUNDAY

GRAVENHURST — A first-degree murder charge has been laid against a Beaver Creek federal prison inmate here after a fellow convict died Sunday.

The OPP have since charged Devon Saunders, 54, with First Degree Murder contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada (CC) sec. 235(1).

Saunders was to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge today.

Police say that on Dec. 18 at 9:50 p.m., officers responded to a report that an inmate suffered “significant injuries” at the correctional facility in Gravenhurst.

Leslie Ma, 31, of Alberta, was pronounced dead at hospital.

The OPP, which investigates prison crimes, revealed few other details.

But MuskokaTODAY.com has asked for more information from police and will report them as they respond.

The Muskoka Crime Unit is continuing the investigation under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, with the assistance of the OPP Forensic Identification Services and in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.
