MUSKOKA — Two early morning robbery attempts within hours today — one successful and one not — have landed a Huntsville man in custody while police in Bracebridge are looking for another suspect.

Both occurred at Circle K convenience store in Huntsville and Bracebridge.

However, OPP in both towns didn’t say if the incidents were related.

The first happened at 2:57 a.m. in Bracebridge, when police were called to Taylor Road.

An unknown man dressed in black with their face and head covered, entered the store and gave a note to the cashier demanding money, the cashier was able to exit the store and call police.

The person fled on foot in the direction of Dudley Drive and police say was unsuccessful in obtaining anything from the clerk.

The suspect is described as a white male in his twenties, approximately six feet tall and 175 to 185 pounds. He was wearing a black face covering, possibly a neck warmer, pulled up over his nose and a black hat pulled down revealing only his eyes.

He was wearing a black jacket with a white marking on the left front shoulder side and dark coloured pants with a large white sticker or marking on the left knee area.

Police are asking those in the area who have home or business surveillance systems or video doorbells to look for any information that may help identify the suspect.

Three hours later, at 5:53 a.m., officers in Huntsville responded to a report of a robbery at the Circle K store on Main Street east after a man entered the store, demanded, and made off with a small amount of money and cigarettes.

In less than five hours a police investigation led to the arrest of 27-year-old Joseph Whitfield, of Huntsville.

He was charged with:

  • Robbery with theft contrary to section 344 (1)(b) of the Criminal Code.
  • Wear disguise with intent contrary to section 351 (2) of the Criminal Code.
  • Failure to comply with undertaking contrary to section 145 (4)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

Whitfield was held in custody to appear later today, Nov. 25, in the Ontario Court of Justice, Muskoka.
