HUNTSVILLE HOTEL FINED $32,500 AFTER COMPLAINTS ABOUT FIRE CODE

HUNTSVILLE The director of a hotel here and its corporate owner pleaded guilty to fire code violations and were fined $32,500 in court this week.

Charges were filed by the Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department following an inspection of the Main Street property at the south entrance to Huntsville in February 2022 after a complaint was received.

After an investigation, a number of “serious contraventions” of the Ontario Fire Code were observed during the inspection and Orders were issued for several deficiencies, says a fire department release Friday.

On Wednesday, Sept. 21, in Bracebridge Provincial Offences Court, the corporation owning the Red Maple Inn in Huntsville and its director pleaded guilty to six counts each of charges laid against them.

The corporation was fined a total of $25,000 and the individual was fined $7,500 plus victim surcharges for subsequent contraventions of the Ontario Fire Code.

The total fines amounted to $32,500

The owner has since brought the hotel into compliance with the Ontario Fire Code.

Complaints about the hotel last February led fire officials to investigate and charge the owners and director of the Red Maple Inn in Huntsville with fire code violations. This week they were fined $32,500 in court after pleading guilty to 12 charges.
