GRAVENHURST — A pet mauled to death by another dog has led to several charges against a Gravenhurst woman.

Provincial police say officers responded June 13 at 8:30 p.m. to a complaint from a dog owner who said their pet had been mauled and severely injured by another dog.

They say the attack happened earlier in the day on Phillip Street and the injured pet had been rushed to an emergency animal hospital.

But the dog succumbed to her injuries.

Officers conducted an investigation jointly with Gravenhurst bylaw officers and have charged the 47-year-old woman with the following:

  • Fail to exercise reasonable precautions to prevent dog from behaving in a manner that poses a menace to the safety of persons or domestic animals (Dog Owners Liability Act 4(1)(c i))
  • Fail to prevent biting or attacking a person or domestic animal (Dog Owners Liability Act 5.1)
  • Certificate of Offense – issued under the Dog Control By-law for allowing the offending dog to run at large

As a result, Gravenhurst bylaw officers have also declared the offending animal a “dangerous dog” and issued a muzzle order.

The accused dog owner is to appear in Provincial Offenses Court in Bracebridge Aug. 24, 2021.

Meanwhile, in Orillia police are appealing to the public for information regarding an earlier dog attack in which a man and his two pets he was walking were attacked.

One of the small dogs suffered severe injuries.

Police say that on June 9, at 8:30 p.m., the man was walking his dogs on George Street when he encountered a black dog, which was not on a leash.

He picked up both his dogs and attempted to walk past the area, but was attacked by the unleashed dog.

The dog owner was assisted by a female who was in the area, and another male driving a blue van, both of whom are believed to have witnessed the incident.

Police are continuing to investigate, but have yet to identify the two witnesses.

They ask that if you saw the incident or have any information, to contact the Orillia OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

If you have any information about this crime you can go online to www.opp.ca/reporting.

You can also call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or submit your information online at www.crimestopperssdm.com if you have information on any crime. Crime Stoppers does not subscribe to call display and you will remain anonymous. Being anonymous, you will not testify in court and your information may lead to a cash reward of up to $2,000.

Two dog attacks in Gravenhurst and Orillia the past two weeks have led police to charge a Gravenhurst woman after one pet died; and Orillia OPP to look for witnesses to another incident in which a small dog was severely injured.
