MOBILITY SCOOTER DRIVER LEADS POLICE IN FOOT CHASE

MUSKOKA — A Severn Township man was in bail court this morning after the mobility scooter driver led police on a foot chase in Gravenhurst before being charged with impaired operation of a vehicle Wednesday.

He was the first of four drivers in south Muskoka that evening who had the licences suspended for 90 days and their vehicles impounded in separate impaired driving investigations.

At 8:30 p.m. officers in Gravenhurst noticed a man driving a mobility scooter in the middle of First Street in what they considered “a concerning manner.”

When an officer approached him, he fled, leading police on a short foot chase, they say.

Officers eventually caught up with Travis Shelton and arrested the 27-year-old.

He was charged with Impaired Operation by Drug CC 320.14(1)(a), Fail to Comply with Demand CC 320.15(1), Resist Peace Officer CC 129(a) X 2, Possession of a Schedule I Substance – Methamphetamine CDSA 4(1) and Fail to Comply with Probation CC 733.1(1).

Shelton was held in custody to appear today in the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge on June 25, 2021 for a bail hearing.

Ninety minutes later, also in Gravenhurst, an officer was parked on Bethune Drive when an all-terrain vehicle passed by driving in what police said to be an unsafe manner.

The driver was also not wearing a helmet.

The officer conducted a traffic stop on Moody Drive and arrested and charged 21-year-old Tyler Cochrane, of Gravenhurst, with Impaired Operation CC 320.14(1)(a) and Over 80 CC 320.14(1)(b).

Cochrane is to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge on July 13, 2021 to answer to his charges.

At 10:10 p.m. officers responded to a report of a single vehicle collision on Muskoka Road 169 near Glen Orchard in Muskoka Lakes Township, where the vehicle reportedly left the roadway, flipped and was on fire.

Muskoka Lakes Fire Department and Muskoka EMS attended and the driver was transported to hospital with minor injuries.

After a police investigation 45-year-old David Singh, of Oshawa, was arrested and charged with Impaired Operation CC 320.14(1)(a) and Over 80 CC 320.14(1)(b).

Singh is to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge on July 27, 2021.

At 11:35 p.m. officers received multiple complaints from members of the public about a vehicle travelling along Matthiasville Road in an unsafe manner.

The vehicle left the roadway and landed in the ditch.

Officers were able to locate the operator nearby and subsequently arrested and charged 32-year-old Karl Belanger, of Bracebridge, with Impaired Operation CC 320.14(1)(a) and Over 80 CC 320.14(1)(b).

Belanger is to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Bracebridge on July 27, 2021.

Police say they were led in a short foot pursuit after a mobility scooter operator fled while being investigated for impaired operation of the vehicle.
