GRAVENHURST — The gift that keeps on giving will benefit seven of nine groups that applied for special community endowment funding.

A citizen committee recommended $25,000 from the town’s Terrence Haight assistance fund go to projects for kids, mental health, GAP, Ryde Co-op and $1,000 for something called Safe Quiet Lakes.

Council approved the requests Tuesday, some of which had previously received Haight funding.

“Gravenhurst continues to benefit from the generous gift left behind by the late Terence Haight,” said Mayor Paul Kelly. “I think that Mr. Haight would be very pleased to see how we have shared his generosity and continue to spread good throughout Gravenhurst by supporting various community groups and their programs.

“Congratulations to the successful applicants and to all groups who submitted applications this year. Thank you all for the exceptional work you do for Gravenhurst.”

Nine applications worth $44,688 were made.

In the previous years since the bequeath in 2014, there have been 72 applications from 39 organizations totalling $329,387. And $101,283 was granted.

Last year council created the COVID-19 Financial Assistance Fund with $25,000 from the Terence Haight Endowment. So far $12,000 has been disbursed to the Rotary Club of Gravenhurst, the Moon River Metis Council and Gravenhurst Against Poverty.

Council established the Terence Haight Financial program in 2013, following Haight bequest of $1 million to the town to benefit local citizens.

The fund’s goal is to provide limited financial assistance to groups and organizations within the municipality to assist with activities, special events or with an improvement to the organization’s existing assets.

The Haight family lived in Bracebridge and Terence Haight’s wife was from Gravenhurst.
