GRAVENHURST — An OPP officer has been taken off the street and is under investigation after a kid at the skateboard park here appeared to be shoved to the ground by the cop Sunday during a COVID check.

OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique has asked Peel Regional Police to conduct an investigation into the incident.

In a statement, the OPP said: “Officers stopped to speak to a group of young people, none of whom were wearing masks or social distancing. Officers attempted to interact with the youths which led to a physical confrontation between one officer and one young person.”

The officer involved has been reassigned to administrative duties while the investigation is conducted,

“We understand the concerns being expressed by members of the public, and I want to assure everyone that the Ontario Provincial Police holds its members to highest levels of professionalism and accountability,” Carrique said.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or the circumstances prior to it, is asked to contact the Peel Region Police at 905-453-3311.

The investigation comes about after a viral video circulated on social media that shows a police officer confronting a “12-year-old” who was shoved to the ground.

Erin Strength, who posted it on Facebook wrote: “They were apparently checking to see if they were wearing masks!!!! The officer grabbed the kids scooter and the kid went to get it back and that’s when he got shoved. This is disgusting!!!!”
