LIONS CLUB HELPS STUDENTS WITH INTERNET ACCESS IN MEMORY OF CHRIS LEWIS

GRAVENHURST — Students struggling with COVID class challenges and online learning got a boost from the local Lions Club.

Club members presented a cheque to the Gravenhurst Public School to help two families with access to the internet for the rest of the school year.

Keeping up with class assignments and homework is often difficult without reliable or effective computer connections.

It’s something principal Jennifer Richter knows firsthand and sees on a daily basis.

So when the club approached her she welcomed the much-needed help; and has selected a couple of students who could really benefit from the Lions’ generosity.

The $360 donation is but a small part of the Lions’ mandate to help the community and local youth.

And it was a timely opportunity as the club gets ready to mark its annual memorial day.

So first vice president Wally Hines and member Sharon Morton took the opportunity — at a recent online Zoom meeting — to combine the two.

They made a motion for the school grant in memory of former Lion Chris Lewis, who died this winter and was a big advocate of youth projects and internet access.

As part of the motion, members also voted to rename the club’s annual May 1 celebration of life day the Chris Lewis Memorial Day of Service.

It’s the day that all Lions set aside to remember and it challenges members do random acts of kindness in the community.

Yesterday afternoon Lewis’ widow Marjorie and his daughter Jess, who are both Lions, along with club secretary Kathy Scott, made the presentation to Richter outside GPS.

Gravenhurst Public School principal Jennifer Richter, centre, accepts a $360 cheque from Lion Marjorie Lewis, as club members Jess Lewis and Kathy Scott and everyone gives the thumbs up.
