SIMCOE-MUSKOKA — Has the lockdown since Boxing Day helped?

Some numbers hint at that.

But a deeper dive makes it difficult to determine as the sometimes dizzying array of numbers are all over the map as to when and where cases happened and the dates that they are sometimes untimely reported by the health unit, which reminds readers that its stats are always subject to changes and updates.

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit reports 170 cases since its last report on Thursday and 51 new cases this week as of yesterday (Jan. 17).

Today’s accounting, which dates back to a Gravenhurst case Christmas Eve, is the latest example.

Weekend figures that include Friday, Saturday and Sunday show 162 new cases in Simcoe and Muskoka.

With 8 of them in Muskoka — but not all recent.

Backing into them from Monday they show (with reporting and episode dates):

  1. Jan. 16 – Jan. 14 – female – 45-64 – Bracebridge – community acquired
  2. Jan. 16 – Jan. 14 – female – 45-64 – Bracebridge – community acquired
  3. Jan. 16 – Jan. 13 – female – 45-64 – Huntsville – community acquired
  4. Jan. 15 – Jan. 14 – female – 35-44 – Muskoka Lakes – close contact

  8. Dec. 24 – Dec. 19 – male – 18-34 – Gravenhurst – community acquired

In addition, single cases in Gravenhurst and Bracebridge were removed from previous reporting.

The health unit says today 11,189 vaccine doses have been administered, including 1,437 the previous day.

And that confirmed cases so far total 4,592, with 1,187 active cases.

They say for the most recent week (Jan. 10-16), the average daily growth in confirmed cases was 1.4 per cent.

And based on projections, if this level of growth continues there will be approximately 595 cases reported during the week of Feb. 7-13, or about 85 cases per day with a projected weekly incidence rate of 100 cases per 100,000 population.

Meanwhile, Ontario saw 2,578 cases today and 24 deaths.

Toronto cases dropped to 815, Peel 507, York and Niagara 151 and Hamilton 121.

Provincial test numbers also fell to just over 40,000.

Quebec’s numbers were also down significantly to 1,634 cases, with 32 people dying.

Manitoba reports 118 new infections and 4 deaths.
