SIMCOE-MUSKOKA — We’re four-for-four today in Muskoka if you’re COVID-19 counting.

That’s four more northern cases among 70 reported on Jan. 5 — for Jan. 4 —by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU).

Two women in Gravenhurst, aged 18-34 and 45-64 are under investigation as to the cause of their infection.

Another older woman in Bracebridge, between the ages of 65-79, came in to close contact with someone with the coronavirus.

A Lake of Bays man, also aged 65-79, also had close contact with a virus-positive person.

Monday 10 Muskokans were among those testing positive so far this year.

The SMDHU also removed a Gravenhurst person from previous listings, transferring them to a different public health unit.

They are among 316 new cases this week. Last week there were 388 new cases.

Also of note is that there have now been 3,123 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine administered in Simcoe and Muskoka, mainly to health-care workers in local hospitals, long-term care and retirement homes.

There were 599 Monday.

And one more death since Monday’s report, bringing to 20 the number of locally deceased.

Twenty-six people are hospital with COVID across the region.

Ontario reported 3,128 cases and 51 deaths, Quebec 2,508 cases and 62 deaths, Toronto 778 cases, York 172, Peel 614 and Hamilton 151.

NOTES:

  • Trudeau “frustrated” at slow rollout of vaccine across Canada.
  • Public anger mounts as Canadian politicians flout stay at home rules.
  • The London Health Sciences Centre network of hospitals has had to bring in a refrigerated truck to store more bodies after south-western Ontario’s largest morgue filled up due to outbreaks at the end of 2020.
The new year sees 14 Muskoka COVID cases, which is why people like Cindy Mailing of Gravenhurst, are still wearing masks when going about their business.
