MUSKOKA — Two large institutional outbreaks — including one in Beeton with 33 cases — have again pushed local health unit numbers to their highest level of the pandemic.

The 19 cases reported today, Oct. 8, by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit push this week’s total to 92.

That includes an outbreak at the Simcoe Manor in New Tecumseth.

There were no cases in Muskoka.

  • 5 were New Tecumseth
  • 4 in Barrie
  • 2 each in Innifil, Essa, Bradford-West Gwillimbury and Tay Township.
  • 1 each in Penetanguishene and Midland

Three who contracted the coronavirus are under age 18.

Ten cases remain under investigation by the health unit.

As the second wave ramps up, the health unit says October has seen more cases than July and August together.

And that there are 100 active cases presently, with most cases in adults aged 80+.

There have been 41 deaths in the region attributed to COVID 19 in the past eight months.

Across Ontario, the province had its highest daily count at 797.

Meanwhile, Quebec continues to lead the country with 1,098 cases Thursday.

Today’s top 19 list is mostly centred in New Tecumseth where an outbreak at Simcoe Manor has seen 33 people hit with the virus in a wide-ranging institutional outbreak as of Oct. 8.
