DON’T STOP TERRY NOW — RUN, WALK, BIKE … ALONE ON SEPT. 20

WINDERMERE — Terry Fox may have stopped his Marathon of Hope in Thunder Bay in 1980 — after passing through Muskoka.

But legions of his supporters since then have carried on his hopes till 2020.

They have raised more than $700 million worldwide to fight cancers like the one that claimed the famed one-legged Canadian hero.

Like those here in Windermere, where Sept. 20th would have marked the 21st year for their Terry Fox Run.

Lois Jackson, one of the longtime organizers, says like many towns and cities across the country, for the first time it will be held virtually.

The theme: ‘One Day, Your Way!’ encourages participants to be creative with their run, coming together in spirit of Fox and raise money for cancer research.

She says although this year’s run will be a new experience, “We are still extremely excited to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Terry’s Marathon of Hope with our community.”

Fox was an innovator, attempting to run across Canada on one leg on a humanitarian mission we had never seen before.

Four decades later, “we will have to innovate as well,” says Jackson.

This year run, take a stroll through your neighbourhood, backyard, down the street or walk around the block.

As Fox said — and proved: “Anything is possible if you try.”

Registration remains unchanged.

You can register at https://terryfox.org/run/ or sponsor another runner as you have in previous years.

The Terry Fox Foundation funds many different types of cancers; current multi-year studies include lung, ovarian, colorectal, pancreatic, oral, liver oncolytic viruses and many more.

Although you will not physically see the organizers and volunteers this year, they have continued to work many hours preparing for this event as they have done in the past. “Thank you, keep safe and wear a mask — so hopefully we will be able to meet again in 2021,” says Jackson.

Terry Fox ran from the Atlantic Ocean to Muskoka and on to Thunder Bay before cancer halted his Marathon of Hope. Canadians carried on and will do so again this year on their own.
