LOCAL OPP FACE SECOND SIU INVESTIGATION THIS MONTH

BRACEBRIDGE — Provincial police here say they are again being investigated by the SIU.

It’s the second time this month the province’s independent Special Investigations Unit has been called in to look at an interaction by the local constabulary service policing south Muskoka.

But don’t expect any more clarity on this issue soon than the last one.

On Aug. 1 the OPP were involved in a different incident that after an arrest resulted in the suspect being returned to the hospital in Bracebridge where they were first called to an act of vandalism.

SIU INVESTIGATE AFTER OPP ARREST MAN IN HOSPITAL INCIDENT

In the most recent case — says a release from the same Bracebridge detachment — they say officers were conducting an investigation into a criminal offence on Thursday Aug. 13 “and arrested one suspect.”

“During the course of his arrest, this person made an allegation that he had sustained an injury during a previous arrest and was taken to hospital for treatment.”

The OPP said Aug. 14 it has notified the SIU, which has invoked its mandate to investigate any alleged injury involving police.

As a result, the local OPP say they will not be able to provide any further information and said any other inquiries should be directed to SIU Communications.

As with the other incident, MuskokaTODAY.com’s contact with the SIU revealed no more than the original news release from the OPP at Bracebridge.

Calls on the weekend were directed to a voicemail box that was full.

MuskokaTODAY.com will seek further comment on both arrests.

An Aug. 13 arrest by OPP at Bracebridge is being investigated by the SIU after an alleged injury involving local police.
