GAP GETS $50,000 FROM CFCA FOR GIFT FOOD CARDS

GRAVENHURST — The pandemic has been good for the GAP as donations continue to pour in.

Marlene Buwalda, manager of Gravenhurst Against Poverty, says that after their application they were awarded $50,000 from Community Food Centres Canada (CFCA) for grocery cards.

She said that the cards will be distributed similar to the Rotary Club’s Care for a Neighbour gift card program the club initiated.

And, said a GAP volunteer, it will also be used once they resume their weekly in-person meal programs.

CFCA’s Good Food Access Fund was set up in response to the COVID-19 crisis to help provide emergency food relief in low-income communities across the country. CFCA spokesperson Kennedy Sherwood said GAP received the funding in late March.

She says it was initially a $3-million fund, but it expanded with support from foundations, corporations, and the federal government, and to date they have granted almost $10 million to 400+ organizations across Canada.

Some GAP community gardens continue to produce produce as fundraising and donations to the charity group continue to mount amid the pandemic.
