POLICE CHASE ENDS IN DITCH AT HORTONS GRAVENHURST

GRAVENHURST — A police chase through the south end of Gravenhurst ended in a ditch in front of Hortons here late Wednesday afternoon.

And provincial arrested two people June 10, charging one of them.

They say that on Wednesday June 10, at 4:30 p.m., officers with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Central Region Traffic unit were conducting a RIDE check on Sedore Road in Gravenhurst when they say a vehicle attempted to evade them by turning and driving in the opposite direction at a high rate of speed.

Officers caught up with the vehicle in Gravenhurst after it lost control turning on the main street of Muskoka Road South, when it left the road and landed in the ditch becoming partially submerged in water.

Police say the two occupants tried to flee the scene even after an officer caught up with them and eventually arrested them.

A member of the public noticed one of the suspects throwing an object away and the OPP Canine Unit and Underwater Search and Recovery (USRU) were called to conduct a search for evidence, ultimately recovering a cell phone.

Police charged 21-year-old Shemar Walters, of Brampton, with Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle CC 320.13(1) and Flight from a Peace Officer CC 320.17.

He appeared in bail court June 11, 2020.

The second occupant of the vehicle was a 17 year-old youth.
