ELEXICON DONATES $2,500 TO SMMH’S COVID FUND

MUSKOKA — Local hospitals are getting some help from a Muskoka hydro provider.

Elexicon Energy’s Gravenhurst advisory committee recommended a donation of $2,500 to support the COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund at the South Muskoka Hospital Foundation and the Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital Foundation.

It’s part of a larger $50,000 in donations to help hospitals in the communities Elexicon serves in the Lakeridge Health network, including the Ajax Pickering Hospital, Bowmanville Hospital, Port Perry Hospital and Whitby Hospital.

President Lesley Gallinger said in a release Thursday, May 14, that the money is to help “front-line workers in our communities are equipped with the best tools to provide critical care to those affected by the virus.”

The Durham Region Fights COVID-19 campaign will receive $20,000 for the Lakeridge Health Foundation, $16,500 for the Ajax Pickering Hospital Foundation, $5,000 for the Bowmanville Hospital Foundation and $3,000 to the Port Perry Hospital Foundation. This campaign will fund three critical priorities: resources to improve patient experience, equipment and capital needs for patient care, and staff wellness.

In April, the Lakeridge Health Foundation granted urgent funding that allowed its hospital sites to purchase iPads and ensure family members can remain connected with patients through video. To date, over 400 connections have been made between patients and their loved ones.

The Belleville General Hospital Foundation receives $3,000.

Elexicon adds in its release that it has taken several measures to ensure that everyone can have reliable power through COVID-19. All electricity disconnections have been suspended, extended bill payment options and financial assistance programs remain available, and a scheduled rate increase has been voluntarily postponed until Nov. 1.

Elexicon Energy provides more than 169,000 residential and business customers in parts of Durham Region and beyond with reliable and affordable energy services. The company is the fourth largest municipally owned electricity distributor in Ontario. Elexicon Energy is owned by five municipalities: the Town of Whitby, the City of Pickering, the Town of Ajax, the City of Belleville and the Municipality of Clarington.

South Muskoka Memorial Hospital’s emergency pandemic fund received $2,500 as part of $50,000 in donations by Elexicon Energy to area hospitals in the Lakeridge Health network.
