HUNTSVILLE KEEPING COVID WATCH ON SHORT-TERM RENTALS

HUNTSVILLE Pandemic fears are heightening ongoing efforts here to control short-term rentals like Airbnb.

Town officials say today that in response to the province’s April 3 update of essential services, the Town of Huntsville has issued a Letter for Short-Term Accommodations with restrictions for any booking after April 4.

Reports out of Toronto say some condo residents there have seen people checking in with suitcases.

And with a added sensitivity about cottagers relocating to Muskoka — and putting added stresses on grocery stores and hospitals — local legislators are watching closely.

The town has the past year been looking into how taxes might be applied to business opportunities to rent out accommodations in properties — such as condos — that aren’t being occupied full-time as a main residence.

And they have made some movement in that direction as part of another local visitor accommodation tax program relating to hotels and motels.

This as the summer cottage rental season would appear to be in doubt for 2020 and possibly beyond.

The town also notes its staff are not responsible for confirming what workplaces are essential and will continue to communicate how services will be offered during this emergency.

Essential workplace information is available by calling Stop the Spread Business Information Line at 1-888-444-3659 or ontario.ca website.
