HERE’S WHY CLIMATE PROTESTERS ARE MARCHING

Mark Clairmont | MuskokaTODAY.com

As Canadians in Bracebridge and Huntsville today join the global climate strike marches to fight climate change, a startling, sad story on Canada’s waste recycling is set to air tonight on the CBC.

It seems a lot of our plastic is not being recycled as promised.

It’s a similar story to one this year about Canadian waste in the Philippines.

One expert interviewed said only about 10 per cent is recycled.

No wonder protesters are marching.

Marketplace producers went undercover overseas and posed as recycling brokers to expose the lucrative plastic waste business.

Marketplace tracked where Canadian plastic bags from Canadian Tire and Giant Tiger end up. Some are burned overseas.

They say they revealed that companies are willing to break the law to buy Canadian plastic and show how some of it is dumped and burned in illegal landfills, where the toxic fumes and run-off is making people sick.

Back in Canada, they bought nine tonnes of plastic and secretly track where big companies are taking it.

Will it actually get recycled?

Where does your recycling really end up?

Watch the 47th season premiere of Marketplace tonight at 8 p.m.; and in repeat at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and 12:30 p.m. Sunday.
