HORTICULTURE GARDEN SHOW BREATHTAKINGLY BEAUTIFUL

GRAVENHRST — There are many things in life to savour and enjoy.

Food, wine, sunrise, sunset, the Northern Lights, music of most kinds.

But nothing beats one of the most beautiful and simplest pleasures that come from the gardens and flower beds, which are always like Mother Nature’s fireworks.

Yet it takes a green thumb to grow a green tomato that is worthy of a red ribbon.

And that’s what the Gravenhurst Horticultural Society (GHS) members are renowned for.

No simple task is that.

Witness Saturday’s annual garden and flower competition among the 70 members in the club at the Gravenhurst Active Living Centre (former the Seniors’ Centre).

Among the almost 150 entries were the most pleasing plants and breathtaking annuals and perennial God or any grower worth their green thumbs would appreciate.

Several members submitted a dozen or more entries.

Tables full of indescribable reds and greens and yellows and purple. A kaleidoscope of colour that would make a rainbow blush.

All expertly grown with the TLC and talent of decades of digging, weeding, pruning and picking experience.

There were a lot of “Precious Moments” in the show, even some grass. Tall grasses that is, not the four pot plants all gardeners can grow – for medicinal purposes, of course.

“We had lots of exhibits and good participation in the design category,” said president Pat Wright, of the Ontario Horticultural Society-sanctioned event.

Judge Cathy Dyer, of the Bracebridge Horticultural Society, singled out five Gravenhurst show members with special presentations of best in show.

They were Marg Nicholson, Tina Stone, Pat Wright, Lois Cooper and Iva Hodge.

Points and prize money will be awarded a meeting early in the fall.
