HENDERSON-KOLK GUITAR DUO GET DOWN WITH SOUND, EH!

GRAVENHURST — One of the first things you notice about the Henderson and Kolk Guitar Duo is that Drew Henderson is shorter than Michael Kolk.

Michael Kolk, left, and Drew Henderson enjoy performing music that’s never been performed on the guitar before.

And that may help explain Henderson’s “fancy eight-string guitar,” which allows him to get down to a low A, rather than the normal low E or D on most other guitars, like Kolk’s.

“So, it opens up our repertoire so that we can play anything we want,” says Henderson in a YouTube video for their first Prairie Tour.

“One of the things we enjoy most is performing music that has never been performed before on the guitar,” adds Kolk on the video.

“Like Mozart’s 40th Symphony.”

This has resulted in wonderful arrangements of Mozart, Bach, and Schubert, among others.

The Canadian musicians who met while studying at UofT and have been playing together since 2004, will be performing next week, on Good Friday April 26, for the Muskoka Concert Association.

The performance will be at Trinity United Church in Gravenhurst.

Advance tickets are available at Gravenhurst Opera House box office, www.gravenhurstoperahouse.com or by calling 705-687-5550.

They will also be available at the church door the night of the MCA’s first spring concert.

The affable duet has established themselves as one of North America’s premier classical guitar duos.

Bradford Werner of This is Classical Guitar.com says they are, “…one of the most spectacular classical guitar duos performing today.”

Their two recordings continue to receive numerous glowing reviews, including their second album, “Henderson-Kolk Duo play Bach, Ravel, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, and Lhoyer,” which was featured on the American broadcast Classical Guitar Alive! as a best new release.
