$350,000 FIRE DESTROYS WEST GRAVENHURST COTTAGE

GRAVENHURST — Firefighters were out in full force Monday at suppertime for a blaze that levelled a West Gravenhurst cottage, resulting in $350,000 damage.

Eight fire trucks and 25 firefighters responded to a cottage fire Monday at suppertime in West Gravenhurst.

Gravenhurst Fire officials report that at 6:30 p.m. on March 25, the lone occupant called 911 after discovering a fire in the walls and attic of the single storey structure.

By the time fire crews from two different stations arrived the flamed had already broken through the roof.

Eight fire trucks and 25 firefighters responded to the call, and despite their efforts the cottage was lost.

A partial roof collapse and propane tanks adjacent to the cottage hampered efforts to bring the fire under control during the initial phase of the fire attack.

Firefighters remained several hours at the scene.

There were no injuries and preliminary damage estimates have been set at $350,000.

Fire officials say the fire is not considered suspicious, but no cause has been determined.
