Windermere Gazebo Concerts continue with Lloyd, Simão Aug. 5

WINDERMERE — Wayne Strongman, one of Canada’s most distinguished music directors, continues his summer concert series this Sunday, Aug. 5, at Christ Church in Windermere, 7 p.m.

Jim Strongman presents his second Gazebo Concert on Aug. 5 at 7 p.m.

The second in the Gazebo Concert series will feature The Art of Portuguese Fado with musicians Jessica Lloyd and Louis Simao.

From concert hall to opera stage, from studio sessions to nightclubs, Lloyd’s genre-crossing vocal abilities never fail to impress. When she is not on stage, Jessica is the head of music at Havergal College in Toronto.

Simao has been composing, performing and recording as a multi-instrumentalist in a variety of genres for over 20 years. In November of 2017, he was named World Solo Artist of the Year by the Canadian Folk Music Awards, and in April of 2018, was nominated by the Independent Music Awards for 2018 World Beat Artist of the Year.

Christ Church, Windermere on Lake Rosseau, Muskoka, has offered year-round services in the Anglican tradition since 1904.

Jessica Lloyd

From concert hall to opera stage, from studio sessions to nightclubs, Jessica Lloyd’s genre-crossing vocal abilities never fail to impress.

She has been afforded opportunities to work with such ensembles as Tapestry New Opera Works, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and The Canadian Opera Company.

In her nonclassical pursuits, Jessica was the lead singer with the Billy Ledbetter Orchestra, a big band from Houston, TX.

She was also a founding member of the a cappella trio, wayward sister. For the last eight years Jessica has collaborated with multiinstrumentalist and composer Louis Simão exploring the musical traditions of the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking worlds.

When she is not on stage, Jessica is the head of music at Havergal College.

LOUIS SIMÃO

Louis Simão

Award-winning, Toronto-based musician Louis Simão has been composing, performing and recording as a multi-instrumentalist in a variety of genres for over twenty years. 2016 marked the release of his much-anticipated solo album, “A Luz” (The Light) – a collection of Simão’s own compositions and arrangements that takes the listener on a journey through the sounds of the Portuguesespeaking world in a compositional style and voice that is at once universal while

remaining deeply personal.

As a sideman, Simão has performed and/or recorded with Nelly Furtado, Kiran Ahluwalia, Dominic Mancuso (2010 JUNO winner), Michael Occhipinti’s Sicilian Jazz Project (2009 JUNO nominee), Luis Mario Ochoa, Justin Rutledge, Guinga, Henrique Cazes, Patricia Cano, Daniela Nardi’s Espresso Manifesto, Sophie Milman, “MARIA SEVERA” at The Shaw Festival, Tapestry New Opera Works, Eliana Cuevas and Aline Morales. Described as “utterly unique” (CBC Radio One),

he was the winner of the 2007 USA Songwriting Competition in the World Music category with his song, “Fado Torto”, while in 2008 he was the invited artist of the Portuguese Consulate and the Instituto Camões at the Festival de Printemps in Azzemour, Morocco.

Nominated in three separate categories for the 2017 International Portuguese Music Awards (IPMA), Simão won Song of the Year with his composition “Três Anos” (Simão/Petrilli). In November of 2017, he was named World Solo Artist of the Year by the Canadian Folk Music Awards and in April of 2018, was nominated by the Independent Music Awards for 2018 World Beat Artist of the Year.
