Haliburton man 72 drowns while fishing with boy 16

HALIBURTON — A 72-year-old man drowned Thursday night when he fell out of the boat — while out with a 16-year-old male fishing partner.

Police say McCabe was not wearing a life jacket.

Provincial police say that on Aug. 2, 2018 at about 10:48 p.m., officers from the Haliburton Highlands OPP along with Haliburton County Paramedic Services and Dysart et al Fire Department were dispatched to a reported drowning on Black Lake in the Township of Dysart et al.

The 72-year-old was pulled from the water by emergency personnel. The male was then transported to local hospital where he was pronounced dead. 

He was not wearing a life-jacket.

The deceased has been identified as Douglas McCaabe, of Dysart et al.

The Haliburton Highlands OPP is assisting the Office of the Chief Coroner with the Coroner’s Investigation. Black Lake is just west of Hwy. 35 in Minden Hills, Haliburton County, on the east end of Queen Elizabeth II Provincial Park, near Moore’s Falls, Miner’s Bay and Gull Lake.

The Haliburton OPP want to remind everyone using our lakes and rivers that marine safety cannot be over stressed and that the wearing of life-jackets can help keep you afloat should you find yourself overboard.
