B.C. man charged in ‘violent’ death of father at Kahshe Lake cottage

GRAVENHURST — A B.C. man has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of his 67-year-old father in a “violent altercation” at a Kahshe Lake cottage Saturday afternoon.

Police say a “violent altercation’ took place at the cottage and the accused son, Adam Kehl, is charged with indignity to a body, among other second-degree murder charges.

Provincial police say that on Aug. 11, at about 3:30 p.m., officers from the Bracebridge OPP detachment responded to a report of a “violent altercation” at a seasonal water-access only residence on the lake.

Upon arrival, John Kehl, of Brampton, was found dead.

The Kehls are a large well-known family on the lake.

A police release says the investigation into Kehl’s death is being conducted by the Muskoka OPP Crime Unit, under the direction of Detective Inspector Gerald Scherer from the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB).

Police divers were on the scene searching for evidence in the lake, located at the south end of Gravenhurst.

A 30-year-old male from British Columbia was taken into custody at the scene and as a result, Adam Kehl, the son of the deceased, has been charged with:

Second Degree Murder, Contrary to Section 235 (1) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

Indignity to a Dead Body‎, Contrary to Section 182(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada.

Assault, Contrary to Section 266 of the Criminal Code of Canada.

The accused has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice located in Bracebridge tomorrow for a bail hearing.

A post mortem examination will be conducted ‎at the Office of the Chief Coroner – Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OCC-OFPS) in Toronto ‎at a date yet to be confirmed.

Police say the investigation remains in its early stages and further details will be released only as they become available and where the investigation permits.
