Muskoka beaches may be target of more vandalism

MUSKOKA — Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, police are warning beachgoers to be on the lookout for more glass in the waters of south Muskoka’s public beaches.

Police say glass has been found at local beaches after cleanups this spring.

Provincial police at Bracebridge say they have been working closely with local municipalities in surrounding the issue of area beaches.

The beaches in Gravenhurst and Bracebridge were closed this spring until earlier this month after what is believed to be public mischief and vandalism.

They were busy again this past weekend with the heat.

A great deal of effort on the part of the municipalities has gone into thoroughly cleaning, sweeping and raking the beaches and preparing them for use by the public.

But they may be the target of more vandalism.

Beachgoers are sporadically reporting the ongoing findings of glass in the water, say police.

Police and local municipalities are requesting the public’s engagement on the issue and ask that when people are out enjoying the beaches, that are they diligent about their area and assist by being attentive to waste and debris.

If beachgoers see anything that seems suspicious, please make note of details and report the matter to Bracebridge OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

For example in the case of a suspicious vehicle, try to make note of licence plate numbers, vehicle colour and body type, provided those details can be obtained safely.
