Fire rating HIGH: No fires in Ward 1 Gravenhurst

GRAVENHURST — It’s the long weekend and the bylaw and fire departments are fired up and won’t tolerate any foolishness.

For the May 24 long holiday weekend, the fire rating in Gravenhurst is HIGH.

They say in a reminder that with the arrival of warmer weather, the holiday weekend and the Forest Fire Danger Rating in Muskoka on High, they would like to remind residents and visitors about burning regulations and safety.

Daytime burning is prohibited until October 31.

Contained and supervised fires are permitted (2) hours before sunset, throughout the night to (2) hours after sunrise the next morning.

Ward 1 (all of the core area around the downtown) has an absolute prohibition at all times.

Factors to consider before burning:

  • Only class A combustibles are permitted to burn,
  • Fires must be 15 metres from all structures and vehicles,
  • Fires must be 5 meters from any forested area,
  • Fires cannot exceed 2 X 2 metres in size,
  • Fires are not permitted in windy conditions and smoke cannot impair motorists or other residents,
  • Fires must be attended at all times with a water supply readily available,
  • Zero tolerance for burning during declared fire bans.

Listed factors along with the bylaw are enforced pro-actively on a complaint driven basis throughout the burning season and can result in charges ranging between $200 to $350 per offence, along with other emergency service fines.

If the fire is not a safety hazard and emergency services are not required, residents and visitors are advised to report their concerns to the by-law department. Complaints can be submitted through the Town’s website

www.gravenhurst.ca/bylaw  or call 705-687-3412 Ext. 241.
