Indigenous evening with CBC’s Jesse Wente May 17

BRACEBRIDGE — Learn how Trillium Lakelands District School Board is supporting Indigenous education through a special presentation May 17.

Parents, students and the public are invited hear Jesse Wente speak at the Rene M. Caisse Theatre in Bracebridge at the 11th annual Parent and Community Evening for First Nation, Métis, and Inuit Education.

Jesse Wente is the guest speaker May 17 at the TLDSC’s 11th annual First Nations evening.

Wente is Ojibwe, and his family comes from Chicago and the Serpent River First Nation in Ontario.

He is an advocate for aboriginal arts, most notably on screen.

He draws attention to the imagery used by Hollywood in portrayals of Indigenous peoples and stresses the need for a culture to have an influence on their own depiction.

His pieces on The Revenant, Beyoncé, and sports mascots were among the most shared on CBC.ca.

In 2017, Jesse was appointed to the Canada Council for the Arts.

This is a free event. Reserve your tickets through the Rene M. Caisse Theatre by calling the box office at 705.645.8400. For more info, visit www.thecaisse.com.
