MNRF dogs sniff out illegal trout in snow during blitz

PARRY SOUND — The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry laid 19 charges and issued 29 warnings during a recent fisheries enforcement blitz in the district of Parry Sound.

19 charges were laid and 29 warnings issued in a one-week blitz.

From February 22-25, conservation officers and the ministry’s canine unit focused on the restrictions in place to protect brook and lake trout populations. The canine unit was used to detect trout hidden in the snow by anglers.

Of the 295 anglers checked, 47 were found to be in violation of Ontario’s public safety and natural resources legislation.

Brook trout were the target of the investigation.

Charges and warnings issued for fisheries offences included:

Possessing live baitfish for use as bait on protected brook trout lakes;

Angling with more than the permitted number of lines possessing;

More fish than specified quota;

Fishing without a licence;

Angler being more than 60 metres from their hole while angling.

Additional charges and warnings included:

Having or consuming liquor other than on licensed premises, residence or private place;

Failure to wear proper helmet on ATV or motorized snow vehicle;

Driving motorized snow vehicles with no licence or insurance.
